Hi IMPACT

 

October 31^st             

These are trying times in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil characterized by a broken economy brought on by the largest corruption scheme in the history of any democratic nation.  Many Brazilians continue to leave and seek opportunities abroad while the federal armed forcebs are needed to protect the city.  God’s greatest blessing in Rio de Janeiro over the past two decades is the growth of the evangelical church. 

The presence of the church has certainly NOT resolved all societal problems, and sad to say plenty of evangelicals are involved in the scandal.  But it is fair to say that this coming-of-age church has made a big impact by giving hope to countless families during times of crises. 

One of the ways God has used ReachGlobal and the Weyandts in Rio de Janeiro to develop High-Impact disciple-making in Rio de Janeiro was through investing in Biblical teaching by partnering with EFCA Biblical Pathways and the Caju Life Church.

In August we, Mike Gunderson from Pathways, the Life church leadership and I, carefully studied and preached through the book of Colossians together.  The purpose of Pathways is to equip local pastors to train others to train others how to carefully study the scriptures and teach with precision. 

This was the 9^th book of the Bible that we studied and preached through together over the past four years.  Each time these young disciple-making leaders passed on the teaching to others.  Hundreds of disciple-makers have been impacted by the careful Bible-Study method and continue to discover the beauty and power of the transformational Gospel as it is revealed throughout the Bible.

Currently the Life Church leadership is preaching through the book of Colossians with their church.  It is part of their mission to train Brazilian Pastors to equip others how to carefully study the Bible wherever they send missionaries.   They truly are a Gospel-centered, disciple-making church committed to  church-planting movements.

• Praise the Lord with us that He has done this great work.  We praise God for the faithfulness and discipline of all the Caju Life Church Leaders who not only studied and preached through the scriptures with us, but also passed it on to the next generation of disciples. 
• Please continue to pray for Pastor Fabio and the Life Church leaders as their Gospel influence continues to spread in the neighborhood of Caju, Rio de Janeiro and to un-reached regions of Brazil.

Great Summer!

Alyssia, Alessandra and I are immersed in many new endeavors this Brazilian Spring  (North American Fall!).  

We did not have more than a weekend to relax after saying goodbye to our APEX Team and dear friends.  They spent six weeks with us from the end of June until the beginning of August.

It was a wonderful experience for our family and I believe for all who participated.  In fact, four of the five young adults that participated indicated that they are interested in spending two years with us here in Rio.    The only one who did not is entering his freshman year of college and is not yet thinking of life after graduation… but…. what will life be like living in a dorm away from home!  We trust that each participant has not only blessed our Brazilian partners, but is also more prepared in every way to make Disciples of Jesus where they live right now. 

Come and See; Come and do with us; Go and do.  We divided our six weeks into these three invitations following Jesus’ ministry while working with our Brazilian Partners.  Learn, Relate and Serve!    We were blessed by the quality of each person that participated including the adults that came down to serve the team as dorm parents, ESL specialists, Mentors, Cooks, City Guides and did whatever needed to be done!   We received a team of nine North-Americans and a host of Brazilians that blessed us as well. 

 

We are so thankful to the Lord for providing the funds and workers needed to finish phase one of the APEX house!  Six of the nine team members stayed in this new lodging!   We have been receiving people all most non-stop ever since the team departured!

 

Well, it is time to start recruiting for next year’s team!   We will be busy contacting churches, prayer partners and financial supporters telling of the opportunities there are to serve in all the roles that I mentioned above!   

In my next email I will share more about our new adventures!

Ready or Not....

                                                                             February 6, 2017

 

Remember when we were kids and somebody shouted, “Ready or Not…..?  I am sure you can fill in the rest!...  “Here I come!”  Only in our context it is, “Here we come”!    Alessandra, Alyssia and I just received the news that we have 8 Apex college students/young adults confirmed and coming to spend 6 weeks with us!  We are maxed out with the four young woman, three young men and their fearless young leader, Jordan.  

This is good news but it presents a real dilemma  WE ARE NOT READY!  We need more space, showers and toilets!

 

We will have between 14 and 16 people staying in the mission home! This includes the Apex team, the Weyandt family, Brazil staff and US and Brazilian church partners! 

 

WE WILL BE READY!  Many of you have been praying faithfully for us.  Many of you contribute financially to our ministry.  We need you to let others know about the Mission House Project!   Would you be willing to share our need and vision with a church, small group, family member or individual that you believe would want to contribute to the APEX Experience. 

 

 

Brazilian Partners from REDEMIS Last Saturday at our Home share Tacos and Guarana while we dream and plan together how we can impact the APEX Rio participants!

 

·       Praise the Lord with us for those coming to Rio and that there is such a hunger among young people to go farther and deeper in their relationship with Jesus and understanding of their call to serve.

·       Pray that the Lord will raise up individuals, churches or regions to partner with us financially in completing the Mission House Project!.

·       Pray with us that the Lord will provide the financial partners we need to raise the additional $1000 a month we need.

·       Pray that God would give us wisdom and His direction as we work with our partners to create our ministry opportunities for the APEX team.  We will work with partner ministries that focus on Disciple-Making  and administrating God´s justice and mercy in our Urban Setting.

To Haiti and Back Again!

<![endif]>I was somewhat weary and doubtful as I boarded the plane leaving Rio for Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  I hated to leave my family, and knowing the high financial investment I was making in a time of financial difficulties added to my unrest. The Lord is faithful and provided once again.   I had a very good trip to Haiti and to Florida.    I was very moved by our team in Haiti and all that they are doing through partnerships with the Haitian, Brazilian and US churches.   As usual I was blessed by the ReachGlobal leadership too.  There are some pretty sharp and very godly men and woman that participate on these City Team Leader meetings and so I am always very challenged.  

<![if !vml]><![endif]><![if !vml]><![endif]>One of the principles that was clearly modeled in regards to partnership was one of “Relate, Learn and Serve”, a call to go slower in order to go farther and deeper.  Our mission in Rio is to make disciples in Community, life on life, learning and doing together.   The “doing” is synonymous with serving, and the relating and learning part we are working hard at through making disciples in community in partnership with the Brazilian Church.  

I will receive some financial help with the cost of this trip tooJ.  God is Good.

 We have already received a couple of confirmations for our summer college student and young adult mission experience, APEX .   This is an invitation for individuals and churches to come Relate, Learn and Serve with us J  (Follow us on Facebook Life on Life Rio)

Many of you have been praying for Alessandra’s home Bible study with Moms.   We hosted our first one!   We are really grateful to the Lord for this opportunity to receive these 9 woman and their children in our home.

  One of the great  challenges is hosting the 12 children belonging to the moms.  They range in age from 1 to 5 years old.  Guess who is in charge of this tribe!   Craig!  I am going to have to pick up my game.  

My team of two  other fathers, a grandpa and me struggled with 7 kids on our first attempt.   My first activity, turned perfectly civil children into nature natives (above)…..we lost total control after that.  Now I now why teenagers want 15  bucks an hour to babysit (though I don’t know that they get that much…. We certainly did not! But I feel we deserved it).   

Pray for Craig and the Dads too as we work with the children.  This is an opportunity to reach out to the men and the kids at the same time.   Need wisdom!

Pray that our kids will learn to Love God and love others as we have this time together.
